Retaining Walls Launceston

Describe the wall and your enquiry goes to one local provider, who inspects the site and quotes in writing. One measurement comes before any quote: how much ground the wall holds back. The State's Director of Building Control puts a low wall in its lowest-risk category, sets 1.8 m of retained ground, engineer designed, as the next, and treats a wall with no height limit as Notifiable Work that needs a Building Surveyor. The City of Launceston asks you to contact its Building Department before any building work starts.

  • Each enquiry goes to one independent provider for Launceston, not to a list of firms that all ring you.
  • We do not build walls. The provider inspects, then names the price.
  • We state the rule, whose it is and its source, with the date we read it.

Before you get a quote

Four things to know first

  • Height comes first The State's Determination sorts a retaining wall by the height of the ground it holds back: 500 mm within 1500 mm of a boundary, a road or a right-of-way path, otherwise 1.2 m, in its lowest-risk category. Measure that before you ask for a quote.
  • Measure it the State's way The Determination says the height includes the distance between the ground in front of the wall and the ground that is retained, so the drop on the low side counts.
  • Hazard areas are a limit The Determination lists work in natural Hazard Areas, landslip and flooding among them, in the limits a low-risk wall must meet. What a mapped band changes for a wall is in separate Determinations we have not read.
  • Planning is a separate question The Determination says a wall can need a planning permit and not a building permit, or the other way round. The City of Launceston can say what applies to your block.

Three steps

From enquiry to quote

  1. Tell us about the wall How much ground it would hold back, how close it is to a boundary, and what the slope is like.
  2. It is passed on Your enquiry goes to one independent local provider covering Launceston. The provider pays for the introduction; you never do.
  3. A provider inspects and quotes The provider looks at the site and prices the work in writing. The price is theirs to set.

Retaining Walls across Launceston

Launceston's ground is not one thing. The planning scheme's Launceston Local Provisions Schedule, which the City says came into effect on 14 September 2022, carries a Landslip Hazard Code with four bands and a Flood-prone Hazard Areas Code, and the State's Determination lists work in natural Hazard Areas, landslip and flooding among them, in the limits a low-risk wall must meet. This site does not say whether any block is in one. The planning and hazard areas page and the suburb pages show what each source says and who can say for your address.

Tell us about the wall: how much ground it would hold back, how close it is to a boundary and what the slope is like. A local provider covering Launceston will call you back. The enquiry goes to an independent qualified provider, who inspects and quotes in writing. The price is the provider's to set, not ours, and we cannot say whether your wall needs any approval: the City's Building Department can. Before a quote arrives, the Retaining wall costs and rules check shows the State's and the City of Launceston's lines that can apply to a retaining wall, each with its source.
